So you want to be a state senator?

State Sen. Capri Cafaro of Liberty, D-32nd, has set the bar quite high for whoever is appointed to replace Sen. John Boccieri in the 33rd District. Boccieri is going to Washington as the 16th Congressional District representative, and Democrats in the state Senate will select his successor.

Why does Cafaro's opinion matter? Because she will be the leader of the 12 Democrats in the Senate come January. While the selection process is formal — the Democratic Party in each county in the 33rd District will submit recommendations to the caucus — the minority leader will certainly hold sway.

And from what she said Saturday morning during an interview on a talk show hosted by Dr. William Binning and this writer on WGFT-1330 AM, the job isn't for the faint-hearted or the lazy.

Indeed, Cafaro has earned a reputation of being one of hardest working legislators in the General Assembly and actually spends time reading legislation that is introduced. During the radio show, it became clear that she wants Boccieri's successor to have the same work ethic.

In other words, if you're thinking of applying for the job of state senator just to bolster your public pension, don't bother. The minority leader in waiting isn't going to back someone she thinks will end up being a political hack.

There is no doubt that electability will be a key factor, but from what Cafaro said Saturday it is one of several that will be taken into consideration.

As a non-office holder, the following would be included in my letter of interest for the appointment to John Boccieri's Senate seat: "I apologize for not being able add to my credentials the fact that I would be abandoning an office already entrusted to me by my respective electorate."

It's also interesting to note the double standard in partisan politics. Cops and firefighters are limited in what they are permitted to do when it comes to partisan politics, but someone who has boosted his electability due to his military service is not.

What she really wants is a puppet with whom she can manipulate just as she's done in the past. Rest assured dady will have a HUGE say in who gets that position.

stuckinOH - If you think that Capri can't speak her own mind without her father's approval, you don't know women very well. From what I have seen, she has a lot of gumption and is correct in having high expectations for someone to serve our area. Shouldn't we have the same expectations from our leaders or are we fine with status quo politicians that go from office to office?

Now that Lisa's not resigning, is Engler now throwing his hat in the ring for state senator? Is he electable after his public reprimands by the Supreme Court for not attending sufficient continuing legal training and for having sex with a client? He did run in this region before for state school board...hmmm

Is that, along with Robin, the best we can do?
